“The Senate has Really Become a Threat to Democracy as We Know It” - Rep Chris Murphy
Promotion: This makes its way back to the top of the page because Congressman Murphy’s interview on WNPR is being played on CTN right now and the Republican Presidential debate was really boring.
Freshman Congressman Chris Murphy made his views on the United States Senate known last Friday, saying: ”the Senate has really become a threat to democracy as we know it”. The comment came on the WNPR program “Where We Live” on Friday, December 7th.
Take a listen for yourself. The - shall we say curious? - comment came 43 minutes into the program, between 43:14 and 43:18.
Senators Dodd and Lieberman would probably be surprised by this revelation, to say nothing of the other 98 U.S. Senators or the United States Constitution.

Rahm Emanuel had a similar quote in the NY Times, “As an amateur student of constitutional history and as a member of Congress, I have come to the conclusion that the Senate was a historic mistake.” http://tinyurl.com/269h83

Rep. Emanuel’s quote could be written off as an offhanded joke. There really isn’t a question about Mr. Murphy’s though - he seriously thinks that the U.S. Senate is “threat”.
Murphy’s 4th grade teacher, who undoubtably taught Mr. Murphy about ‘checks and balances’, would be dismayed.

It was probably accidental. He was following bin Laden’s talking points a bit TOO closely.

Speaking of “checks and balances” does anyone remember the campaign to save the filibuster in 2004/2005 or so? There was a website savephil.com with a cartoon character named “phil e. buster” and his friends “checks” and “balances” who were in danger from Senate Republicans. Was all run by some democratic leaning 527. Might be worth resurrecting to highlight the about face the Democrats have made on the ‘obstructionist’ issue since they gained the majority.

To be fair, I’d say Murphy is much more “Hugo Chavez” rather than bin Laden.
