You guys are scaring me with the Ron Paul stuff.
January 7th, 2008 at 8:43 AM
Then be scared.
Paul represents the “I am sick of government” movement.
For once someone is saying, “I will do less”.
Be scared, but get the message.
Hopefully Paul scares the living daylights out of the Republican leadership.

I should have noted that these photos are from Manchester, New Hampshire, last night. Jessie Hamilton’s article in the Courant this morning describes the scene.

So incredibly jealous, next time my wife and I are heading up there to get some face time with the candidates. My old room mate (red meat darwinian economist) went to see Obama and said he does know how to deliver a speech, he couldn’t stomach going to see Hill.
He’s got a Ron Paul sign on his lawn.
Hill’s negatives are coming home to roost. And the democrats want a winner they don’t care who.

I am sick of the government too, but to cut and run from the war and to leave places like Pakistan is nothing short of scary and foolish. I don’t think he will scare anyone with 4%. I think he will end up being the Ross Perot and Howard Dean of this election…
January 7th, 2008 at 1:26 PM
As I’ve said, elsewhere, Paul is a bit too isolationist for me.
I think he’ll do better than 4%, he has a lot of support among young people, which is good to see. Youth supporting a conservative that is.

I was in New Hampshire this weekend - it was incredible. The Ron Paul supporters were everywhere! I heard him speak at the Crowne Plaza and he was brilliant. I even met Barry Goldwater jr. ( http://www.eclipptv.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=677?undefined ).
We cannot dismiss that Ron Paul support is growing - with or without the cable media. His message of liberty is a strong and powerful one. The revolution has started and the youth of America have had it with the same old same old. You may not think he will amount to anything - but you could be wrong. He is no Ross Perot and he certainly is no Howard Dean.
We ran into McCain in our hotel, because he was staying there too. The guy was totally unimpressive and all his staffers could do was complain about how New Hampshire residents were walking around with holstered guns, exercising their 2nd amendment rights. I respect the man for his military service - but his stance on free speech (Mccain Feingold) and immigration are miserable IMO.
Ron Paul is NOT an isolationist - he is an anti-interventionist… there is a difference. The message of no foreign entanglements is spot on as far as I am concerned because we have only gotten ourselves into the middle of more civil wars and promoting freedom everywhere else but here at home as we strangle our own personal liberties in the name of security! We cannot continue to be the world’s policeman! The Roman Empire fell, and we are on the same road. As for monetary policy - Ron Paul knows more than the whole lot of them - and the way we are taxing and printing money we are killing our economy. Wonder why oil prices are high? It’s because the dollar is sinking!
This republican party has got to start to wake up. Some of the candidates are already stealing Ron Paul’s ideas. That ought to be a big clue to some people.
Think about it.
January 7th, 2008 at 1:49 PM
I don’t see it as cutting and running - I see it as ending something that ought to have been ended a long time ago - tell me exactly when the Iraqis are going to be ready to assume control of their security? How long have they been dragging their feet on this? How much longer and how many more of our boys must die until the Iraqis get their act together? We are doing their job for them and that is not really our job to do. The surge worked - it bought the Iraqi government some time - and now we ought to leave them to manage their own affairs, otherwise we will never leave and it’ll be just another Korea. In the meantime we use our resources in other countries instead of stopping the invasion that is going on at our own borders.

The answer to your question Judy is “as long as it takes” The president has a responsibility to defend the citizens of the United States from enemies both foreign and domestic. We also have a responsibility as a world leader to do what we can to spread freedom (and therefore peace across the world ) America is the shining beacon of freedom for the people of the world. We need to be strong, defend ourselves, and free oppressed people whenever possible. We need to educate the peoples of the world as to the sovereign beauty of democracy. We have a responsibilty to try to give all of the people of the world the same quality of life, the same level of education, the same level of personal freedoms to the rest of the world’s citizens. American soldiers will unfortunately continue to sacrifice the most. They will pay the heaviest price. That is why it is so important to keep fighting the good fight. They give so that men and women of the world will someday be able to live in peace and safety. To Cut and Run Paul out of Iraq would be a disgrace and absolutely would be the end of America as we know it today. No one would ever trust the word of the American people again.
January 7th, 2008 at 4:21 PM
Like they trust the word of Americans now??
C’mon Fly Right.. we do not have the responsibility to police the world and if we cannot practice liberty and freedom at home then how do we tell others how to do things?
What you say is noble and ideal, but we have no such obligation to free anyone outside of our borders, especially for “as long as it takes”. We will not be able to live in peace and safety as long as we are meddling in other countries affairs.
Would you like it if the Chinese came here set up bases and started telling us how to run things? I doubt it. We cannot afford to be hypocritical about this.
How are we the shining beacon of freedom when we are searching everyone everywhere, spying on everyone and restricting our own liberties???
What kind of quality of life and education and standard of living will we have after policing the world has bankrupted us? (and it is happening)
Yes - we can educate the people of the world about democracy - but we cannot cram it down their throats. They have to stand and fight for themselves as well.
It isn’t cutting and running - it is owning up to our obligations of taking care of our people - our economy, and our troops after we have given the chance to Iraq to take over for themselves.
Do you not believe in the sovereignty of other nations? Shouldn’t they be able to manage their own affairs - and if they have civil war deal with it themselves?
Are you suggesting that no other country can manage their affairs without US intervention? I can see how well we have done financing in the billions of dollars Mushareff and his military dictatorship. That’s really spreading democracy! Bhutto is probably quite thankful for our intervention.
Sorry - I have to disagree on this one.
You speak nice patriotic words and ones I once truly believed, but the way we have tried to accomplish spreading democracy has thus far been disastrous in my eyes to those who we are trying to “help” and ourselves as well. We deserve a smaller less intrusive government. We should be spreading the word of personal responsibility and economic prosperity through free markets. We should be following the advice of our founders.
We keep arming and financing people who eventually end up shooting and killing us. How much aid are we going to give Turkey so they can attack Iraqis? How much aid are we giving Palestinians so they can kill Israelis? It is just a complicated mess. For me the best thing is to cut all aid and come home.
The only time men will be able to live in peace and safety is when we stop financing the bullets and guns and bombs that they are using against each other, and instead we do business and trade so they can have a prosperous economy.
If you think you can eradicate every Islamofascist in the world then you are fooling yourself, and I don’t believe we should become American fascists in the process.

Attention Republicans: Get out your white flags because freedom and liberties aren’t worth fighting for anymore. The great satan ( us) must stand at home and fight the Mexicans. We must vote for cut and Run Paul. We must cut all foreign aid plans. We must appease the EU. We must buy Citgo gas to make Chavez stronger. We shouldn’t try to make peoples lives better. We should isolate ourselves from the rest of the world, our country, and live under homeschool arrest forever.
January 7th, 2008 at 6:29 PM
Fly Right -
That’s not what I said. This is the type of spin we always hear.
There are no white flags.
We are not the great Satan.
I suppose according to you we should continue to allow the Mexicans, and terrorists to invade our porous borders.
So you find it acceptable to be funding the oil rich Arabs three times more than we do the Israelis ? Africa needs our tax dollars more than we do? Everyone else across the globe needs our money and our troops? Do you even know how many billions we send to other countries while taxes continue to climb here at home and people have difficulty just making a living and providing for their own family? What sense does that make? How long should we continue bribing other nations into doing what we want them to do? and has that really been successful in the long run? We used to be Saddam’s friend too and look where that went.
We are only appeasing the EU by fighting battles for them. But don’t worry - soon we’ll have our own EU style government - and I’ll vote for Ron Paul just on that issue of sovereignty alone - He is totally against the North American Union and NAFTA and the SPP.
We don’t have to buy Citgo gas - we should be producing our own energy and we have the technology to do so. So tell me why that’s not happening.
We should make our lives better here at home first before we tell everyone else how to do things “our way”. If you want to prove how successful freedom and liberty is then the best way to do that is to practice it ourselves. Are you in favor of the trashing of our 4th amendment rights? the elimination of habeus corpus here at home? How about having chipped Identification papers for everyone to carry - I thought only the dictatorships that we are trying to fix had that going on.
No one is talking about isolationism - we are talking about non-interventionism - and no nation building (just like what Bush ran on).
And thanks for dragging homeschooling into the argument - which has absolutely no bearing on the issues at all. It shows a total unwillingness to stick to the issues at hand. I am sorry that you seem to have a problem with my choice to homeschool my children. Should I now criticize your choice to fly planes? I think not.
I truly respect your opinion and side of the argument- I hope that you will do the same. I was hoping that we could have a civil dialogue about what the appeal of Ron Paul’s message is to many people. You may not think that he has a chance, but the ideas of smaller government - and less government intervention in our lives as well as in the running of other governments - and the notion of getting back to what our Founders intended is very growing and is very appealing to many people, especially our youth who are tired of the same old policies and who see the burdens of immense federal deficits and taxation staring them in the face. We should be leaving a legacy of liberty, freedom and prosperity, not tyranny, government dependence, monetary collapse, and war.

Fly Right flies planes? What kind?
Hey Judy caught you on WDRC with Dan L. “Now Judy from West Hartford”, who else could it be???
Fly Right I think you attributed a lot of comments to Judy that she did not say, and knowing her writings I really doubt she ever would.
January 8th, 2008 at 6:02 AM
Judy- I love you and your blog. I justed wanted to get you to defend Ron Paul and boy did you! If you believe in him , that’s fine with me but I will stay with the mainstream. I just can’t defend a Congressman like cut and Run Paul because he put $400,000 worth of pork into a bill for his district and then voted no although he knew though the bill would pass.

Look who’s got some skeltons in the closet. Our good friend Ron Paul. Enjoy the reading…

As usual the comment section is the best!
http://www.tnr.com/talkback.html?id=e2f15397-a3c7-4720-ac15-4532a7da84ca
“This is all rubbish that has been debunked. Much of it been mentioned on his wikipedia page for months. This is journalism?”
“I was going to leave a post concerning how I would have difficulty trusting the information in this article. There’s lots of talk, but no facts, lots of obvious flaws in logic, and let’s not forget your own astronomically-huge biases. But, I see others have already got all that covered. So, this article told me one thing, which I already knew–the American people are a LOT smarter than you give them credit for! James Kirchick, 0. Readers, 7. Readers win!”
“Journalism at its best. No pictures, no document scans, no bibliography, no citations, no page numbers, anything? The only “evidence” you provide is that since this was published under Ron Paul’s newsletter, he must have wrote it. The one letter you found with an authors name on it wasn’t even Ron Paul’s name either. When you were on MSNBC with your big smile, you made it sound like you actually had a case against him. Oh, and here is a link to an article providing actual proof that he didn’t write any of that and that the ghost writer who did was fired immediately. http://www.freemarketnews.com/WorldNews.asp?nid=41822 Nice try, however.”
“Wow, great article. Thanks for the sources. Oh wait, there were none. Any rebuttal from Ron Paul? Oh, none of that, either. Unfair, out-of-context quoting that Ron has already said wasn’t him? Check. You’re on a roll!”
January 8th, 2008 at 6:06 PM
I’ve seen that . TNR and Real Change dug up nonsense. They have an agenda.
Those articles were not even cited properly, are most likely not even direct quotes, and were most likely written by someone else.
In any case it just proves that the mudslinging has begun because Paul is a threat. He’s already been called all kinds of things… and it’s sadly part of the process. I have met the man personally and he is no racist. The mudslinging against Paul will most likely backfire as negative stuff usually does.
If you have been listening to any of his interviews you will hear what he said about the”pork” - did you hear Tim Russert’s interview?
Another good interview was his interview this past weekend with Bill Moyers. he explains a lot there.
Love ya too Fly Right..
I just want smaller government, less taxation and liberty. I also do not agree with everything the Dr. says, but he makes the most sense to me regarding monetary policy, etc.
Debate is healthy … ok?
Certainly we can agree to disagree…
For what it’s worth, I have had these arguments with my son who supports Rudy. In the end I’ll vote Republican anyway… because I can’t stand the nanny state people.

FYI:
January 8, 2008 5:28 am EST
ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA – In response to an article published by The New Republic, Ron Paul issued the following statement:
“The quotations in The New Republic article are not mine and do not represent what I believe or have ever believed. I have never uttered such words and denounce such small-minded thoughts.
“In fact, I have always agreed with Martin Luther King, Jr. that we should only be concerned with the content of a person’s character, not the color of their skin. As I stated on the floor of the U.S. House on April 20, 1999: ‘I rise in great respect for the courage and high ideals of Rosa Parks who stood steadfastly for the rights of individuals against unjust laws and oppressive governmental policies.’
“This story is old news and has been rehashed for over a decade. It’s once again being resurrected for obvious political reasons on the day of the New Hampshire primary.
“When I was out of Congress and practicing medicine full-time, a newsletter was published under my name that I did not edit. Several writers contributed to the product. For over a decade, I have publicly taken moral responsibility for not paying closer attention to what went out under my name.”

It’s an obvious political attack - unlike what we regularly witness in the Hartford Courant.
Pretty nasty political nonsense.
