"I never meant to say that the Conservatives are generally stupid. I meant to say that stupid people are generally Conservative. I believe that is so obviously and universally admitted a principle that I hardly think any gentleman will deny it."

In 1860's Britain "conservative" meant support for the Monarchy and "liberal" meant classical liberalism of the sort practiced by our founding fathers and now found only in the Constitution and Libertarian Party. In this country, modern "conservatives" have drifted into fascism, which is just a socialist fusion of government and business. Modern "liberals" are rapidly devolving into outright communism. So what Mill said doesn't apply.

Check out the Communist Party website and see how many differences they have with the Democrats. http://www.cpusa.org

They admit it in some of their articles, even if the Democratic Party doesn't. Take this gem, for example "we... have established independent political structures working both inside and outside of the Democratic party. These structures, while in existence for some time have taken on a whole new level over the last several months [10/04]. Organizations like Working America, Moveon.org, are but a few examples of the new structures."

The Democrats do tend to get the stupid vote. In 2000, Gore won the high school drop out vote 59-39, and Bush won the college graduate vote 51-45. The fascists did make great inroads into the stupid vote in 2004, though. The communists only won the high school drop out vote 50-49, but Bush still won the college graduate vote 52-46.

Spitzer, the Rich White Man with a hatred for other Rich White Men has been hoisted by his own petard: good enough for him! he joins a long line of sanctimonious a-holes who felt that they, too, had a higher moral purpose which gave them impunity to the laws and morals that they swore to uphold.

Quick, somebody's got to tell Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Ted Turner and all the other "filthy rich" entrepreurs who are strong supporters of the Democratic Party that "the liberal view of the world tears down anyone daring enough to pursue personal financial incentives and private enterprise." No wonder wiser men than I have said :
"The modern conservative is engaged in one of
man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is,
the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness. "
&
"Liberalism is, I think, resurgent. One reason is that
more and more people are so painfully aware of the alternative."
-- John Kenneth Galbraith --

"Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives."
-- John Stuart Mill --

" I never meant to say that the Conservatives are generally stupid. I meant to say that stupid people are generally Conservative. I believe that is so obviously and universally admitted a principle that I hardly think any gentleman will deny it. Suppose any party, in addition to whatever share it may possess of the ability of the community, has nearly the whole of its stupidity, that party must, by the law of its constitution, be the stupidest party; and I do not see why honorable gentlemen should see that position as at all offensive to them, for it ensures their being always an extremely powerful party . . . There is so much dense, solid force in sheer stupidity, that any body of able men with that force pressing behind them may ensure victory in many a struggle, and many a victory the Conservative party has gained through that power."
-- John Stuart Mill ( British philosopher, economist, and liberal member of Parliament for Westminster from 1865 to 68 ).

The TRUTH is that, as Attorney General of New York, Spitzer was only able to prosecute your rich friends because they were GUILTY of criminal behavior. Otherwise, what you are saying not ONLY that he was able to prosecute these rich friends of yours "daring enough to pursue personal financial incentives and private enterprise, " but that the Republican mayor of New York City at the time, the Republican governor of the state of New York at the time, and the Republican president at the time, and the U.S. Attorney General at the time, and the U.S. Supreme Court under Republican leadership at the time was unwilling or unable to prevent Spitzer from prosecute Republicans guilty of NOTHING more than being "daring enough to pursue personal financial incentives and private enterprise."

If you are too stupid and/or selfish to see through such stupidity, then remain a Republican; you might as well stay and afflict the Republican Party, but if you have some sense and integrity, we have room for you in the Democratic Party.

>>The problem is not that Spitzer was a sanctimonious SOB

Actually, had he not been such a self-righteous, sanctimonious ass; he probably could have survived this stupid episode.

Serves him right.
