CT Delegation Attacked

The Connecticut delegation to the Republican National Convention was attacked today as they attempted to enter the Xcel Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The delegation – including official delegates, alternates, and guests – numbering approximately 120 people – got off the buses and began to walk through the security perimeter into the Convention Hall when they encountered a large group of RNC protesters who formed a human chain to block the delegation from continuing and shouting epithets at the Nutmeggers.

Police officers in riot gear quickly converged on the protestors as the delegation attempted to walk through the blockade. Delegates were shoved and spat upon by the protestors.

When Chairman Healy’s mother Lila was spat upon by a protester, former U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons stepped between the elder Healy and the crowd. He was doused with a liquid substance that was later determined to be a mix of clorox and water. At least 10 other delegates also were hit with liquid.

With police assistance, the delegation managed to break through the crowd and slip inside the security perimeter. The police quickly responded to the altercation and were able to prevent it from escalating further.

The St Paul police and the Secret Service are investigating how the protesters were able to get into the area unopposed.

We’ll have more shortly.

Clarification: We were inside the zone where police were patrolling, but outside of the fences.

  1. Hope everyone is okay – and that the authorities didn’t use restraint in apprehending those thugs. Physically intimidating political opponents (and in this case an elderly women as well!) is how fascism rose to power. This is surely the furthest thing from “civil disobedience” that I can imagine.

  2. Adam J. Schmidt – Is it possible to consider those idiot protestors to be thugs physically intimidating political opponents and not the FBI and riot police that have been kicking in doors of people they considered potential protestors around Minneapolis? That’s potential as in, they hadn’t protested anything; they were just sitting at home minding their own business. Police and FBI have been knocking down doors, putting everyone in the houses in handcuffs, searching the houses, and then leaving often without taking anything or arresting anyone (unless to many questions are asked about warrants and such). How about the the police who shot pepper spray into the face of a girl holding a flower on the side of the road, are they thugs, too? Is it considered political intimidation to restrict people to “free speech zones” behind walls of armed riot police and chain link fence as has been done at several conventions and many place GWB goes? How about the politicians that either authorize such things or write the laws that allow it to happen, are they thugs engaged in political intimidation?

If you don’g consider that thuggery and political intimidation, would you if it happened in China? And you do… does it matter who draws first blood? Of course, like many idiot protestors, the ones throwing bleach probably don’t even know the source of their grievance and just lashed out at whatever was easiest.
