The Everyday Republican

Sarah Palin is Dreamy

Quite frankly, that is the best way to sum up the day – and a whopping 37 million people will likely agree.  Alaska Governor Sarah Palin gave a home run of a performance yesterday during her acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota.  She’s smart, funny, cool under pressure, and a joy to watch.  What more could you want from a Vice President?

Amid the excitement of her impressive performance, the Connecticut delegation got word that Senator Joe Lieberman – an “Independent Democrat” who handily defeated Ned Lamont in the 2006 Senate election – would come to speak to the delegation at breakfast.

The Courant’s crack reporter Mark Pazniokas has the story at Capitol Watch:

So, I’m here to thank my base,” Lieberman said with a wide grin. The delegates, including a one-time congressional opponent, cheered, applauded and laughed.

“I thank you also because in enabling me to be elected as an independent you really were part of a kind of liberation,” Lieberman said

Senator Lieberman was both funny and gracious in his speech to the assembled Republican delegates and we were grateful for his attendence.

5th Congressional District Republican David Cappiello got some key time in front of the Republican National Convention on Thursday as gave a brief address to the floor. We’ll post the video as soon as we’ve got it.

The highlight of the evening was, of course, the acceptance speech by Arizona Senator John McCain – he is now our official GOP nominee.  McCain gave a very good speech to the assembled delegates of the 39th Republican National Convention – a speech that highlighted the very best of John McCain.  I don’t think there is anyone who would assert it was perfect, especially after last night’s exceptional performance, but it was exciting nonetheless.

Connecticut delegate and Norwalk Mayor Dick Moccia was a hero during the speech when he tackled an anti-war protester as she arrived on the Convention floor.

The woman who tried to run onto the convention floor during John McCain’s acceptance speech was tackled by the mayor of Norwalk, Richard Moccia.

“First tackle I made in 40 years,” Moccia said.

Moccia stopped the hippie from further disruption of Sen. McCain’s speech before they hauled her out of the Hall – despite the fact that she was stripping her clothes off as they pulled her away. It was a sight to see, to say the least.

So that is that. The Republican National Convention in Minnepolis-St.Paul is over, and we survived. In the interim, we were attacked by radical protesters, saw Joe Lieberman, and were present for one of the greatest performances in Convention history. It was a memorable experience, if nothing else.
