Blumenthal: “I am supporting Chris Dodd”

U.S. Sen. Chris Dodd must be relieved. Today he found out that Attorney General Dick Blumenthal was supporting his reelection. And the state’s top lawyer also gave Dodd a clean bill of health on his two sweetheart mortgage deals with Countrywide Financial.

”He (Sen. Dodd) may regret waiting to disclose the documents,” said Blumenthal on Sunday’s  “Face the State” program on WFSB. “I see no evidence of wrongdoing.”

Blumenthal noted that Dodd had apologized for not turning over the documents pertaining to the loans and noted that he was suing Countrywide, albeit after several other states had already paved the way for him.  Blumenthal dragged his feet, even after Republican criticism that he wasn’t interested in getting to the facts about how Countrywide managed to gut the sub prime market.

Dennis House, to his credit, pressed Blumenthal on whether Dodd’s press conference did anything to enlighten the voters about the details of his arrangement.

Dennis House asked Blumenthal how he would react if someone he was investigating merely allowed a limited viewing of documents as Dodd did with reporters.

“We supeona  documents, we don’t accept the representation of the companies like Countrywide,” said Blumenthal, his face tightening with that grin. “The people of Connecticut have accepted his explanation (Dodd) and they will reelect him.”

House pressed him, saying the Quinnipiac Poll, taken four days after the Dodd press conference showed over half the respondents don’t believe his story about the mortgages. He then asked, “what if the Senate Ethics Committee comes back and says Sen. Dodd did something unethical or illegal?”

“I don’t want to draw any conclusions,” Blumenthal replied.

Blumenthal quickly change subject and bridged into an almost bizarre listing of lawsuits he is working on concerning Internet porn,  gender bias and something called “breach of security.”

Bottom line, Blumer hopes Dodd goes down the drain, quits or takes a job so he can slide in as the White Knight of the Democratic Party.  In politics, you should always worry more when someone says – “I am with you 100 percent.”

So if having Dick Blumenthal watching your back isn’t bad enough, Sen. Dodd had to endure another blasting from the Hartford Courant Editorial board Sunday, which suggested he might want to call it a day.

“But that “more than 30 years” thing may not work for him at a time when change is in the air. Nor will his part in trying to solve the financial crisis with unpopular trillion-dollar bailouts. Further, many Connecticut residents still seem to resent his failed presidential campaign last year.

They must have changed their water cooler vendor on Broad Street – must have.
