DC Grumbling Aside, States Stay with Steele

Though many in Washington, D.C. have been groaning about newly-elected Chairman of the Republican National Committee, Michael Steele, and there have been some rumors about a coup d’etat against him, a strong vote of confidence is coming out of a rather unlikely source – the rank and file of the Party.
MSNBC is reporting that State Party Chairmen across the nation are voicing their support for the embattled new Chairman even as he takes enfilading fire from inside Washington. State Party Chairman Chris Healy was quoted thus:
“It’s a huge operation. It’s like any new CEO who comes into a company and assesses it,” Chris Healy, Connecticut’s party chief, said. He chalked up the criticism to “internal Beltway navel-gazing” that “will be all but forgotten in another week.”
Healy’s comments, mixed with others from across the country, should tamp down some of the rising criticism of Steele that had emerged over the past few weeks.

I thought Steele’s comments in the new GQ interview affirming a pro-choice (and simultaneously pro-life) perspective — and stating that he doesn’t think homosexuality is a lifestyle choice — are some of the first really encouraging signs I’ve seen from the GOP in my time involved in politics.
Let’s let people work through their reproductive decisions with God and/or their partners, and we Democrats can debate you Republicans on the tax rate and healthcare expenditures and the like instead of spending all our time mired in stupid holy wars. If that’s where Steele is at, and he can manage to hold on to his office, I think that he can do some real good for this country — maybe more than anyone in a similar political capacity has managed to do up to this date.
