The Everyday Republican

Dodd Off the Canvas, But Still Reeling

46857199-120509011Today’s Quinnipiac Polls shoed U.S. Sen. Chris Dodd rebounding somewhat in his approval ratings but trailing former Republican Congressman Rob Simmons in a head-to-head match-up. Simmons leads Dodd, 45-39 but Dodd’s disapproval rating is still 53-38  a gain of five points from the last disastrous poll. These improvements may be result of fawning media coverage of Sen. Dodd’s various pilgrimages to safe local events in Connecticut.

The passage of Credit Card Reform legislation had many potentially positive political results for Sen Dodd, First, there were many photos of him holding onto dear life to President Obama’s hand during the Rose Garden bill signing, which also featured Attorney General Dick Blumenthal, doing his Zelig act in the audience.  Sen. Dodd may rue the day he pushed for these so-called reforms of the credit industry. While some of the laws seem reasonable to cap some of the exorbitant charges, even to those who pay promptly and are good credit risks, the market will respond before many of these changes take effect in six to nine months.

By that time, maybe by Christmas, many Americans are going to be without credit or see it priced even higher. Many of these credit card companies will come to quick realization that  they cannot make any money off certain interest rate charges, particularly to those high risk applicants. The credit business will shift elsewhere and that will leave many people and businesses high and dry. Of course, Sen. Dodd, as we  have learned, can always get credit. Think his check is ever turned down at the Big Y, or in his case, the local Giant food store.
